Today's shizm is a bit more abstract...Sorry to get all introspective on you, but today isn't so much about Rainbows and Puppy Dogs...well there is a cute dog involved, but that isn't the point of the tale. Today is about our small actions and their ultimate outcomes, or how every moment has the potential to be a life changing moment...
So I'm in the street, out walking the dog and I feel the need to look up. There's a guy driving a gold sedan rolling by in front of me. He's leaning over his passenger seat like he's about to ask me something. I lean in as well. He's a big guy with big black glasses, a big smile, and a #23 on his tank top(old skooler). His window already down, he asks me how he could get to Union Square at 14th street. He's in a line of cars rolling up to a red light, but out of the corner of my eye i see the light change. He had a cab behind him and I know New York cabbies get slightly anxious if you waste a split second of their time, and this guy looked friendly, so I wanted to have a crisp response. Now I'm generally not too good with quick directions (i become left/right dyslexic under pressure), but I figure I can pull this one off as he's still moving down the street. 'Take a left at the light, second right is 14th and then go 2 blocks', I fired off with a smile myself. He nodded and got back into straight on driving position. He flowed off down the street with the rest of the cars. Sure there were other ways to get to Union Square, but I was proud this was the most elegant solution, getting him to the partially requested 14th street as soon as possible. Of course, if I wasn't there he might have just gone straight through the light and then turned up University ultimately finding his way without me. But as my dog finished up her business, I still mused at the wonderful feeling of least not making matters worse by sending him the wrong way down a one way street. About 20 seconds later, I turned back down the street and noticed an odd sense of commotion. There was lots of scurrying and I could hear a doorman a few doors down trying to make a 911 call. Me and the dog headed back down the street. In the intersection we found a young woman lying in the crosswalk after having just been accidentally run over.
