Artist Power
...or Artist Powerless?

Fighting to maintain your given rights against bureaucracy is never easy and the ARTIST (Artists' Response To Illegal State Tactics) advocacy group needs help again. Like dejavu all over, the city is attempting to take away street artists' First Amendment rights to sell their work in the parks of nyc. The battle has been going on since 1998, when unconstitutional arrests and confiscations of art occurred. Thanks to the group ARTIST and its founder Robert Lederman the artists have always fought the city and won, but not without major conflict. This year marks a resurgence of the city and parks department's attempt to circumvent the law. Help NYC Street Artists fight unconstitutional activities by the Parks Dept. and Mayor's Office.

UPDATE: THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPT OF NYC DOES NOT CARE WHAT YOU THINK SO STOP THINKING...THE NEW RULES AGAINST ARTISTS GO INTO EFFECT ON JULY 19...HAVE A NICE DAY.

UPDATE 2: Aug 26th, 2010 Good news...A State Court judge has granted a temporary injunction stopping enforcement of part of the new Park rules for 5 days. The injunction prevents the Parks Dept from enforcing the decal marked spots and the numerical limit on artists.

UPDATE 2a: Aug 30th, 2010 A State Supreme Court justice (Milton A. Tingling - with a name like that you know he had to be cool) on Monday upheld last week's ruling blocking the city from limiting the number of art vendors in the parks. This means until the next hearing on a suit filed against the rules, the artists will be back in the parks.
